Winterfell

The Neck

Place Dawn Age

The Neck is where the land narrows between two seas and goes soft. Black water lies everywhere, and the woods stand half drowned and hung with pale fungus. Under the water there is quicksand. Lizard-lions hunt in the channels and snakes in the reeds, and some of the flowers are poison.

The crannogmen live here, a small people who eat fish and frogs and lizard-lion and build their homes of thatch and woven reeds on islands that float. House Reed of Greywater Watch leads them, and Greywater Watch is said to move. Outsiders call them frog-eaters and worse.

Long ago the Neck belonged to the Marsh Kings, until King Rickard Stark beat the last of them and married his daughter. The Reeds have kept faith with Winterfell since. The kingsroad crosses the Neck on a narrow causeway, the one safe way through, and anyone who leaves it without a crannogman to guide him is soon lost.
