The Hunter’s Gate
The Hunter’s Gate lies on the far side of the castle from the main gate, close by the kennels and the kitchens. It gives straight onto open fields with the wolfswood beyond them, so that a hunting party can ride out without passing through the winter town.
On hunting mornings the hounds and horses gather in the yard behind it, and the kennelmaster’s dogs are loudest here. An iron portcullis closes it. When the riders come home with a stag across a saddle they come in this way too, and the kitchens are only a few steps off.
