The East Gate
The East Gate is named for the side of the castle it keeps. The way out passes under both walls, with a drawbridge across the moat between them, and opens toward the kingsroad.
It is the castle’s door to the road. A rider who leaves by it for the Wall turns north. One bound for the Neck and the south turns the other way, with the whole length of the North still ahead of him. In a deep winter, if the gate goes unused, ice can lock the drawbridge chains fast.
